Today, when I go to the local farmers’ market, I can marvel at the selection without feeling overwhelmed. I know how to tell when passion fruit is ripe, which plantains will be sweetest, and if the watercress will be crunchy and faintly spicy. No longer an exotic vacation destination, Costa Rica has become my home, and its produce, my sustenance. This home, our home for the next 4 days, was tucked back in the jungle off the main road. We could easily walk to shops, restaurants, a small organic grocery store, and a fruit stand selling the tastiest mangoes the girls have ever eaten.

Buy a ticket to enter the park and join a tour to learn more about the beautiful animals that call the park home, from macaws and squirrel monkeys to iguanas and sloths. Rent a car in San Jose and start the 4-hour journey to Puerto Viejo.
The locals have great respect for the animals and sea life, and seeing exotic creatures close to the towns and villages is a completely normal part of daily life. I still miss my family and friends in Pittsburgh and Kenya but for now, Sydney is my home. Naturally, when I left Pittsburgh for Sydney, the same feelings of loneliness and unfamiliarity were there, but being a bit older and wiser, I knew what to do. Having taken up yoga in Pittsburgh, I decide to find a yoga studio in my suburb. Because of my love for books, I joined the local library as soon as I could. When the yoga studio announced that they had an evening get-together at a local vegan restaurant on my first day, I decided to be bold enough to go. Sure, in the beginning it was awkward but I kept going and with time, the conversations got easier, and I even made some friends.
We recommend renting a car if you can, as once you’re in La Fortuna, there aren’t many transport options and the sights are very remote. Head north up the coast to beautiful Tortuguero, a lovely village at the heart of the famous Tortuguero national park. This is one of the most remote parts of the trip, where accommodation sits on an isolated sand bar strip and boats are used to reach the national park. Puerto Viejo is the gem of the Caribbean coast and a favorite among those travelers looking for laidback vibes.
